This four star hotel captures the service standards of the past - hence our rating. Our family room was spacious, great value, and perfectly situated. Each room appears to have a balcony and to have a view of the Danube, what more could you ask for. Our out of season experience was extremely pleasant. I found the staff to be 5 star quality and cannot express how appreciative we are of their assistance when our child took ill. We were here for 4 days and wish we could have stayed lobger and experienced the Gypsy music accompanied eating experience on Thursday nights. My overview of the hotel is that it retains charm from yester year. It is not modern like the international chain hotels, but it will allow you to experience a classic hotel that runs as it has for generations. The new champagne bar in the Reception was a boon. The cuisine in the bar was so good that we had to go back and try other classic Hungarian dishes (could do with some music in here though). The cakes in the tearoom were out of this world and very keenly priced for the quality. We are keen to return and be able to try out the outside spa - as it looks very attractive. I am glad we chose this hotel and had a 'non' chain hotel experience. Thank you Gelert!

I like your hotel very much because of the oldfashion atmosphere, and your breakfast , where everything you can expect are present, and what you can`t expect are there as well. The staff I have met so for are very friendly and serviceminded , I got a new room at once, when I told I could not sleep because of a persistent noise from something like a motor, The only complaint I have is that the promised refrigerator was missing, the booking information about the room informed about the presence of a fridge. well I am satisfied with my 2. stay at Hotel Gellert, it will not be the last, as I have family i Budapest.

I had a great time. The room was nothing fancy, but the hotel was charming. The breakfast they serve is amazing and you don't have to eat again until mid-afternoon after eating there. The other dining places in the hotel were great as well and were reasonably priced. The location was perfect for seeing all the sites in Budapest. I didn't use the spa, but I could have had access for one day for free. It looked amazing. The hotel really captures the charm of Budapest.

We stayed here with our 6 year old son and my inlaws mainly for the Christmas market. We booked directly by email and were offered a deal of booking 2 nights with a third free including breakfast welcome drink, free spa and 25% off meals. The hotel also arranged taxi transfer from the airport which as a reasonable price and hassle free. Staff were friendly and helpful from the commissionaire at the door, to hotel reception staff who reminded us to have our welcome drink. The charming foyer was dominated by a Christmas tree and crib which our son adored. Our unrenovated room was enormous (112 I think) with a balcony bathroom and walk in wardrobe /dressing area. It wasn’t up to the minute boutique style, but had elegance and character. With winter temperatures it would have been chilly without the additional plug in radiator already supplied. Our son was comfortable in his rollaway bed. My in laws room no16 wasnt quite as big but till spacious with a balcony. We were very impressed. Our bathrooms were a little old fashioned with standard shower but were spotless. Breakfast in the lovely dining room was self service with a wonderful selection of food from bacon and eggs to salads and patisserie. So good we didn’t need much more than coffee and cake for lunch. We enjoyed the Gellert immensely. Certainly the price we paid was an absolute bargain. The hotel is gradually being renovated. We fear that once all the refurbishments are completed there may not be special deals in the future, and that it could lose its unique character. So go now and ask for a larger room like ours. We popped into the Gresham 4 Seasons hotel for coffee This was a very beautiful historic building which had been refurbished and restyled in the last few years. The communal areas that we saw were shiny shiny and dripping with designer detail …with prices to match We had no doubts at all that the Gellert Hotel had been the right choice for us and would go back again. Unique Quality: The fantastic building itself is a stand out on the Buda side of the river. If you get lost at night you cant miss it.We arrived in darkness and the hotel looked fantastic all lit up and a definite landmark on the Buda side. The views over the river and Liberty bridge were impressive especiallly at night when many buildings were flood lit. The spa is an experience in itself harking back to the days of the Austro Hungarian empire. Each morning we trooped along the corridor up a floor then down in the famous lift and through the public entrance hall to the spa. (Oddly towelling robes were supplied in the hotel rooms but you needed to buy slippers for a nominal sum at the hotel reception so be prepared) The lift ladies always made a fuss of our son in his oversize adult bathrobe they also appreciated our attempts at thank you in Hungarian. The spa was what we were expecting, historic impressive and full of Hungarians taking the whole process very seriously .It felt like you were bathing in an art nouveau theatre. The indoor swimming pool felt quite cold and though my mother- in -law and husband were determined to do a couple of lengths they soon joined the rest of our party in the warm pool at the side. Here you were not officially allowed to swim but to wallow. We also tried the thermal baths. The female baths were closed for restoration so the male bath was temporarily communal dont worry noone was in their birthday suit. The stained glass windows on each floor are a must see. although it was closed in winter when we visited and was undergoing renovation, the outside pool has a unique wave making machine constructed in the 1930s. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the breakfast fantastic. Wed certainly go back again perhaps in the Spring. Stayed 2 nights for a long weekend. Small room as indicated on booking but still larger than the single room I had in a hotel in Venice. It has a small single bed and luckily I had a small balcony overlooking the side street. The shower is good size with liquid soap and shower cap. Mini bar, colour TV and a electronic safe. Buffet breakfast has a good selection of bread, cereal, fruit, cold/ cooked items and tea bags. Unique Quality: Good value for money considering the free use of Gellert Spa for hotel guest although the location is not ideal. However, with no air-conditioning it can get real hot in the Summer (I guess). Also, the rooms use key lock, so remember to lock the door whether one is staying in or going out. Opinion of Price: less expensive than average

This hotel is located neat the Liberty bridge and was completed in 1918. This de luxe hotel has thermal, medicinal baths and has long been a favourite for visitors to the capital, attracted by its famous restaurant and the baths. The bath complex in the Gellert hotel is the largest in Budapest. Documents show that these therapeutic springs were known centuries ago as the “muddy bath” or the building of the Achic Ilidgey in Turkish times. The Art Nouveu building contains a large pool with a series of halls about it. Water is supplied to the pool and the baths by 18 springs at 18C. The Gellert hotel is at the foot of the Gellert Hill with the famous Citadel, St. Gellert’s memorial and the Liberation monument. The Hotel Gellert, one of the leading hotels in Budapest Danubius Hotel Gellert. The Gellert was named after Bishop Saint Gellert, who arrived in Hungary as a priest in the 11th century and was elevated to bishop when King Stephen called on him for help in his campaign to convert his Magyar tribesmen to Christianity. Gellert outlived the king, and in a subsequent pagan revolt against Christianity he was stabbed to death after crossing the Danube in a ferry from Pest. Then by handcart his attackers took him to the top of what is now called Gellert Hill and cast his body down. He was canonized in 1083, the same year as King Stephen. Unique Quality: The unique Art Nouveau style Gellert Bath with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, Turkish thermal baths. Admission to the spa, the sparkling bath, wave bath, steam bath, sun terrace is free to hotel guests. EUR125 per (person) is obligatory - can be paid to the hotel directly. Opinion of Price: least expensive

We were again spontaneously a weekend at the Gellert. The highlight was the bathroom; in the summer, of course with outdoor swimming pool. After a day walking around in the sun in the hot spring splashing around the can. The 100 -year-old wave pool could do. Besides, there was everything I said, the room was big enough, this time old furniture. Basically ok, a hairdryer in the bathroom would have been nice. You should be for everyone renovating the rooms; this work should be continued with Elan. A little extra causion in the room cleaning wouldn't go wrong. The breakfast buffet stunning as always. We had known what to expect - we will definitely go back there again.

We had an old room, that is to say it had not been refurbished but still of reasonable quality. The paint work was chipped and there was some delightful tiling in the bathroom, but all was extremely clean. A comfy place to rest your head after a long day in the city. Do not let others put you off, I do not go on holidays to worry about the condition of the room too much... just thats is clean. The hotel staff were friendly, knowledgeable and also willing to help and the public area of the hotel were very smart and clean. This hotel comes highly recommended if you want a hotel with lots of character, if your interested in a modern styled box (which lets face it could be in any city in the world) then its probably not the place for you!

Hotel: An old Grand Hotel located on the banks of the Danube. Unfortunately the house in the style of socialism restored, so two worlds together blazing; those in the luxury the turn of the century with that of a rehabilitation center the health insurance fund. The breakfast buffet is really recommended, the best I have ever had in Hungary. The public part of the cleanness left a little to be desired, the drapes course in this millennium might not be washed. Location: The hotel Gellert is next to the Danube, structurally well communicated and from May (opened a new metro) optimally connected. From the Kelenföld Railway Station is the hotel with the trams and Keleti well reached with the bus. want to public parking in the area of the hotel. Directly over the Danube is the big market hall. The view from the Danube Terrace or from the room - so you're lucky - on the Danube is endless. Service: The staff was basically very friendly and made an effort. Of course a / two waiters seemed unwelcoming and not accomodating, but we could live with that. The front desk staff was extremely hard. The room cleaning during our stay was rather superficial, towels changed daily. Food: The breakfast buffet was superb. On two days we had half board in the tavern, there was a selection of a not changing menu of around 7 -8 starters, main dishes and desserts. The wine was several times on the map fieldtrip indicated in stock, but has been a younger long enough - sometimes even a vintage 2008. If I want to a novello wine cost, I say that too, a good meal but I want to an older, especially if it so in the menu. The New Year's Eve©s was splendid and really of the best. Restaurant, which we never visited. The rates were upscale, for Westerners but bearable. To all prices in the map, a Trinkgeldpauschale of 10 % added, the bezügliche NOTE was rather unimpressive. Room: We were fortunate enough to have a "sample" rooms with views of the Danube. This room was modernly furnished with everything a hotel has to offer and we were asked to fill out a form, as we were happy with the various equipment, which of course we did like. We were very impressed, a in the bathroom mirror integrated flat screen, the it a together with the waterproof enabled remote control in the bathroom, shower or in other activities from more than 20 channels were, we have never experienced something like that. HUGE beds with very comfortable as we met also appreciate the three phones, so we could also connect and verbally communicate if everyone in its half of the bed was, without having to scream. The view of the Danube, phenomenal. The comfort of bed on New Year to lie around, the TV to see the New Year's Concert and during the Donauwalzers with a glass of champagne in their hands to the Donaustrom to look out, the can. The small deduction are there that we had to attend the arrangements for the air conditioning failed so always a little (too) was cool. But there are a few other rooms, the less sophisticated decor and furnishings, and their window into a stool atirum in the center with doves-go - the investment in the extra charge for the Danube view room is very well laid out. Sport: The New Year's Eve Gala was terrific. A wonderful menu with Weinbegleitung in both grand halls, the festive decorated. To the music of a Zigeunerkapelle. Over an hour show program in each hall (magician, singers, dancers, ... ). After midnight and dancing at one third hall with a further band - these 129 € / person were well spent. Not comprehensible for us was the assigned tables, to which criteria only couples were placed Einzeltischen or with other major assigned? We sat at a table with two other couples for six people; the German conversation, Hungarian, Italian as well as English as ese or was a bit of a hassle. The Gellert Bath is another highlight of this house: At the end of a very real Socialist style hall learns from you already cocooned in the bathroom one lift, which seemed to have been to King Francis Joseph old and by an old Ungarin in a white coat served, a department solicitous reflected in Hungarian talking about and floats in another world. With its at specified outlets forming you walking in the buffet line erheischenden external visitors past the inlet and enter the bathroom with its three sectors, the ladies and gentlemen thermal spa department as well as the indoor pool. It is quite simply the best thing, this has to be experienced. Advice: We will certainly again in summer when the outdoor swimming pool is open and it's the Abendöffnung by classical music. The drink prices at the rooms are very high, just around the corner, there is a small shop, the also mineral water, beer and wine.

If you want the same box rooms furnishings from your hotel, such that you cannot tell if you are in Bangkok or in Birmingham then this is not the Hotel for you. But if you are a true traveller wishing to have a disctinct and unique experience in each destination then this excellent Spa hotel is a must. There are some anchronisms but that all adds to the character. The staff are helpful, the decor beutiful, the spa expereince a joy. For me there is no where else to stay in Budapest.

Excellent hotel with the typical opulence of the early wealthy 20th century. The staff were very pleasant & helpful. If you are over 65 you can travel on buses & trams free if you have your UK freedom pass. Budapest is beautiful classic and classy. The only prob we had was that my wife's jewellery was stolen from our suitcase after we had checked in to the flight. It had to happen there as our cases only took 30 mins to arrive at Gatwick !!!

Excellent trip, Hotel really good, with lots of character. Food excellent and breakfasts with lots of options although a little crowded when we were there. Spa attached is also a great experience and most of Budapest is easily reached by foot, bus, tram or metro..

Good: Beautiful hotel from outside, great history, beautiful old Hungarian spa inside, close to the centre, next to Danube river. Bad: rooms are not so nice especially if you compare it to the beautiful hotel building architecture.

Stayed in Superior double: excellent. Good value, very nice room and fine view of river and bridge. Stayed in cheapest single before: slightly dingy, but good value for money as includes an excellent breakfast and use of the baths.

It is probably worth to take a trip to Budapest just for the sake of the Hotel Gellert experience: the Old World / Belle Epoque grandeur, magnificent location and great service, not to forget free and convenient access to the excellent Baths - one of the best attractions the city has to offer. The Panorama restaurant comes highly recommended, too. On the negative side - their single rooms are in need of renovation and are arguably slightly worse value than the other options.
