Shiatsu is an old, traditional Japanese healing method which is carried out on the floor in loose clothing. (Shiatsu in Japanese means ‘finger pressure’). Unlike the massages of the West that focus on kneading and friction, pressure and stretching are the techniques used in Shiatsu. The masseur uses palms, fingers, thumbs, knuckles, elbows, knees and feet on the body’s acupuncture points along what are considered the body’s meridians or energy channels. In Shiatsu, it is believed that disease is a result of blocked or unbalanced energy in these channels, and the pressure applied in the massage helps to release it. Shiatsu massages are effective in treating many conditions, particularly respiratory and digestive problems, as well as headaches.
