Hévíz is not only known for its thermal lake but is also a well-known wine producing region. The vineyards can be found in the formerly separate part of the town, named Egregy.
If visitors refreshed and rejuvenated after a therapeutic cure in the Lake Baths wished to have walk in the countryside or eat something delicious, all they have to do is stroll along Egregy vineyards to find quite a few wine cellars, wineries and nice little restaurants. The slopes of Egregy with the XIIIth century Magdalena church provide a beautiful environment for hiking, wine tasting or a pleasant dinner. The sightseeing mini-train also stops at Egregy vineyards.
The typical wines of the region are mainly white wines but there are also some red grapes planted. The most known types are Welschriesling, Pinot Gris named Szürkebarát (Grey Monk) and Müller-Thurgau, but you will also find Grüner Veltliner and Muscats (Muscat Ottonel) too. Cserszegi fűszeres (flavoury wine from Cserszeg), the local wine was the first one to win the title of “The official wine of Hévíz” in 2007.
“Wine must be well bedded„ so goes the saying, and the restaurants and wineries of Egregy are a perfect place to do start the culinary adventure.
