Mineral water and natural gas
Mineral water and natural gas
List of Mineral water and natural gas (8 items)

Drinking medicinal mineral water is an important part of your spa stay. The rich mineral waters gently regulate the functioning of the stomach, bowels, kidneys and liver. A drinking treatment normally consists of drinking a prescribed amount of the mineral before meals, as drinking on an empty stomach increases the efficiency and effect of the mineral substances and their absorption into the body. Each particular fountain in our different spa resorts in Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia has its own unique benefits and advantages. Instructions on how to take full advantage of this natural resource can be found in the spa. In general, it is advised to drink between 1-2 decilitres before meals. Our Health Spa Resort of Marienbad was built around the healing effects of its medicinal drinking springs, world famous for its curative effects on kidney and urinary tract conditions. There are seven different mineral water springs in Marienbad, each with their own particular benefits and healing mineral components. Because of this, combined with the importance of embarking upon the correct drinking regime, your spa doctor will advise you on which spring can best benefit your health condition. In Marienbad, you will normally be prescribed to drink between 1-2 litres per day.

This is a signature treatment, exclusively provided in the spa resort of Marienbad using the natural local mineral waters with natural CO2 gas that seeps out from the ground. The mineral water with the CO2 gas is heated to a temperature of between 32-34 °C and flows into an individual bathtub The CO2 gas fizzes onto the skin, producing a relaxing, tickling sensation. The carbon dioxide is absorbed through the skin into the body, where it slows down the heart activity and reduces the blood pressure. Several treatments will result in improved blood circulation, heart and kidney activity as well as reduced stress and anxiety. The benefits and procedures are similar to the carbon dioxide bath treatment (See Hydrotherapy: Carbon Dioxide Bath), however the advantage here is that all the properties used are both local and natural. The bath is followed by a relaxing dry wrap, to ensure maximum benefit from the treatment.

This is a signature treatment, exclusively provided in the spa resort of Marienbad, using the natural local mineral water with a high content of natural CO2, mineral salts and humic acids. The mineral water seeps out from the ground and before the treatment is heated by a special steam boiler to the temperature of 32-36 °C. The natural Carbon Dioxide in the Mineral water is absorbed by the skin and increases the rate of blood circulation. In addition a series of the mineral baths improved heart and kidney activity as well as help reduce stress and anxiety. In this treatment Dead Sea Salts are added. The Dead Sea salt can also be combined with the mineral bath to not only have anti-inflammatory and antiallergic effects but also to help improve the flexibility and elasticity of the skin.

This is another signature treatment of the spa resort of Marienbad, where the gas that bubbles naturally out of the ground – ‘Maria’s gas’ – is used in the treatment. This gas is of volcanic origin and contains 99.7% CO2. In our other resorts, regular commercial CO2 gas (the same as in the food industry) is used. During the treatment, you lie comfortably and fully clothed on a bed, enclosed in a large plastic bag that is sealed just under the arms. The gas is then pumped into the bag, which slowly inflates, and is absorbed through the clothes and skin into the body, where it slows down heart activity and reduces blood pressure. The gas also improves blood circulation and kidney activity and has an anti-inflammatory effect. The gas is also known to stimulate the production of the sexual hormones, testosterone and estradiol, which is why it is successful for improving of sexual functions and relieving menopausal symptoms in women.

Specific to the spa resort of Marienbad, these injections are an application of the famous CO2 ‘Marie’s gas‘ that bubbles naturally out from the ground. The application of this gas to the subcutis in the area of the large joints and spine produces many remarkable effects including pain relief, improvement in blood circulation to the area and an acceleration of healing.

Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy
List of Hydrotherapy (1 items)

The treatment is given in a bath at a temperature of 35-37°C. A powerful, pressurised (0.5 – 2.0 atm) jet of water is released through a hose underwater and directed manually by the therapist to the main muscle groups from a distance of between 10 and 15 cm and at an angle, in strokes. By varying the distance and angle, it is possible to change the intensity of the water jet pressure on the body. The aim of this deep massage is to release stiffness in the muscles and connective tissues and to partially release the joints. It is also probably one of the most effective spa treatments for relaxation available.

Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy
List of Physiotherapy (13 items)

Therapeutic exercise is a crucial part of the recovery process and instrumental to any rehabilitation program. This therapy is led by an expert physiotherapist, normally for a group of guests with a similar diagnostic profile. An example of our classes includes therapeutic exercise for spine or joint conditions, osteoporosis, obesity, vascular conditions of the brain and exercise for cardiac patients. The therapy uses exercises designed to relax overloaded muscles, strengthen weak muscle groups, improve joint, spinal and pelvic mobilisation, and strengthen static/dynamic functions necessary for correct body positioning. An inseparable part of these classes are breathing exercises, in addition to training for speed, agility, endurance, balance, strength and overall fitness.

A qualified physiotherapist conducts all individual therapeutic exercise sessions as prescribed by a doctor. These classes are designed to maintain or restore physical mobility as well as develop functional capabilities. The therapy includes active and passive movements as well as mobilisation and manipulation. Other methods may include visualisation, active muscle contraction, active assisted movements and free active movement. An inseparable part of these classes are breathing exercises in addition to training for balance, strength and flexibility.

Performed by qualified masseurs, the medical massage, sometimes referred to as the ‘classical’ massage, uses a variety of techniques during treatment. The massage generally targets areas where secondary changes have occurred as a result of injury somewhere in the body. Its aim is to speed up the recovery process by improving circulation to the problematic area. As well as improving blood flow to the targeted region, it can relax or stimulate muscles and mitigate pain. The massage is normally conducted in the following areas: back, arms, lower extremities, stomach, chest and neck. Depending on which areas are targeted, this is either referred to as a ‘partial’ or ‘full body’ massage.

After the doctor’s examination and diagnosis, a specific area of the body is prescribed for massage. The aim is to stimulate blood circulation in this specific area, release muscle tension and improve the mobility of the connective tissue and joint.

This uses a very specialised massage technique, targeting nerve connections and endings. The massage is carried out in one of four areas: the head and neck, the back, the chest or the pelvis. Using the thumb and forefinger, the masseur presses firmly along short or long, direct or curved lines. This massage action is very particular and not only promotes healing in the area being massaged, but through a ‘reflex’ effect it promotes healing in the entire body, which is why it is sometimes referred to as a ‘reflex’ massage. In addition, it has been found to be very effective in relieving stress, fatigue, sleep and digestive disorders and high blood pressure. The massage is a very sensitive body intervention that can have certain unexpected side effects, such as short breath, stomach pain, the lowering of blood pressure and sudden fatigue. As a result, prescription is given with care and under the guidance of a doctor.

The main principal of reflexology is based on the fact that in the human body there are more than 70,000 nerve endings located in the foot. These nerve endings connect to internal and external organs throughout the body, through energy channels. This massage specifically targets the hands and feet, stimulating the nerve endings to produce a general healing effect. In particular, it has a positive ‘reflex’ effect on the blood circulatory and lymphatic systems, the immune system, and regulates the functioning of the endocrine glands. The massage also has relaxing and pain-alleviation effects particularly effective for back pain and headaches. It can also help with cases of anxiety, insomnia and digestive system disorders.

This is a specialised massage normally conducted by a physiotherapist which is intended to assist the lymphatic system, particularly in cases where there is or has been an irregularity. The massage involves light rhythmical movements of the hand, applied to the lymph nodes and the lymphatic system. It is this action that stimulates lymph node activity to cleanse the body and assist the flow of lymphatic fluid to remove toxins, debris, cell waste and dead particles. The massage is usually divided into the extremities of the body, with each extremity generally taking half an hour to massage.

Water rehabilitation, perhaps better known as ‘physiotherapy in water’ or ‘hydrokinesistherapy’ is conducted in water at a temperature of approximately 33 °C. In most of our spas the water used will be natural thermal water and the exercises lead by a qualified physiotherapist. Because of the buoyancy, resistance and chemical effects of the water, it is very effective for persons with degenerative diseases of weight-carrying joints in addition to post operative rehabilitation. Water rehabilitation is either conducted in groups with guests of a similar diagnostic profile or even individually.

Ultrasound uses sounds of high frequency and intensity that are converted to mechanical and heat energy. 30% of this mechanical energy results in a type of micro-massage in the tissues of the body that are targeted, resulting in heat generation. The treatment is administered by placing the head of the device in continuous or pulse application into the skin, which has been given a coating of paraffin oil or conductive gel. The depth of impact varies between 2-6 cm and the effect stimulates the molecules, causing subsequent chemical reactions. It also improves blood circulation as well as nutrition of the tissues with an analgesic and antispastic effect. The site of application needs to be prescribed by a doctor, but it is generally an area that is in pain or in need of relief.

This particular massage machine is purposely designed for strengthening and stretching connective tissue, skin and weak muscles. It also has an anti-cellulite effect and boosts the metabolism, helping to reduce body mass. The positive effects of the massage are enhanced by the application of an ivy gel.

This is an apparatus which is used for vacuum-compressive therapy of upper or lower limbs. By changing high and low pressure on the limbs an improvement of the blood circulation and tissue nourishment is generated. This treatment helps the re-opening of blood-vessel connections and reduce swellings.

Our ‘back school’ helps many people to be able to move without pain and is a key part of reconvalescence. Nowadays some exercise theories are considered out-dated. According to the latest research there are no correct or incorrect movements, only movements according to the moment and body strength – comfortable, uncomfortable, convenient or inconvenient. This program included in the back school teaches exercises aimed at strengthening all kinds of muscles cruicial in supporting correct body posture. In particular the stomach, thigh and back muscles.

Repetitive pulsed magnetic stimulation entails special neuro training to strengthen the pelvic muscles .This method uses intense magnetic pulses which create induction currents in the sensory and motor nerve terminals in the targeted tissue.

Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy
List of Electrotherapy (6 items)

In this treatment, different electrical pads at a medium frequency are placed onto the body together with a small vacuum. The effect is one of a micro-massage on the damaged tissue. Depending on the pre-set frequency, the muscles can be stimulated to a so-called muscle gymnastic condition, or alternatively produce relaxation in the muscle tone to have an analgesic effect. The treatment has two advantages: firstly, it reduces pain, and secondly, the micro-massage improves the circulation and flow of oxygen to the tissue, resulting in a healing effect.

This treatment is especially beneficial for rheumatoid arthritis. The forearms and lower limbs are placed into water trays at a temperature of 34°C. Water and a gentle electrical current are the components of this treatment, and an electric current is passed through these particular body parts. Because only the limbs of the body are immersed in water, the electric current in the four-cell bath can be given at a stronger intensity that the full galvanic bath (See: Galvanic Bath). The treatment also has the benefit of improving circulation.

This treatment uses a mixture of electric currents, (both galvanic and impulse), which have an inhibitory or facilitatory effect, depending on the frequency, intensity and other parameters. The result is both pain relief and an improvement in circulation. In general, the treatment is prescribed for conditions such as sprains, bruises, oedemas, joint and spine deterioration and disc degeneration.

This treatment is conducted while lying down on a bed or couch, while the treated body part is exposed to an artificial magnetic field (magnetic blanket, contact treatment head or magnetic cylinder). By creating a weak pulsating magnetic field around the body, it has the effect of recharging the magnetic stimulation of the cells. This results in normalising the metabolism and regeneration of cells, thereby supporting the healing process. The treatment also has contraindications, such as implanted cardio stimulators (pacemakers), fungal diseases, tumours and pregnancy.

The high frequency waves emitted by the device are converted into heat in the body. They warm the affected tissue, and improve circulation and blood flow to the tissue. The treatment reduces inflammation, increases hyperaemia, and has a regenerating effect, which beneficially relieves the uncomfortable symptoms associated with inflammation. In all cases, we offer this treatment to our guests according to doctor's prescription.

This innovative therapy using the Super Inductive System (SIS) is based on the intensive effects of the electromagnetic field, which has positive therapeutic effects on human tissues. Some of the main therapeutic effects are primarily pain relief, fracture healing, muscle relaxation, muscle stimulation, joint mobilisation, etc.
Thanks to a wide range of stimulation frequencies, SIS can be indicated for its analgesic effects for all stages of pain.
The principle of pain relief is based on three different neurophysiological types of pain relief, which differ in their range of stimulation frequencies.
SIS therapy brings immediate pain relief for all stages of disorders, whether chronic or acute (up to 87% of patients described an improvement in their health).
The application has an analgesic effect based on the endorphin theory of pain relief, and activates the endogenous opioid system.
What does it treat?
Arthrosis of the joints, sprained joints, epicondylitis, vertebrogenic pain, bone spurs, arthralgia, traumatic arthritis, tendinitis, impingement syndrome, fracture.

Packs
Packs
List of Packs (5 items)

In our locations where there no natural thermal mud exists, such as in Marienbad, peat is used as an alternative. The procedure is similar to the mud pack (See: Mud Pack), in that the peat is applied to the body at a temperature of between 40-45°C and wrapped either partially or completely onto the body with blankets for a period of 20 minutes. The peat is then hosed off and the treatment may then be completed with a dry wrap (See Other: Dry Wrap). The heat from the peat improves the blood circulation rate and local metabolism, softening the muscles/connective tissues and having an anti-inflammatory effect.

Peat is used in Marienbad, and mud from the salt lake in Sovata for gynaecological treatments. The peat and mud act as a form of localised heat therapy, and are applied in the form of a tampon. Not only is the treatment effective for inflammatory conditions and rehabilitation after gynaecological operations, but is prescribed as a treatment for menstruation and menopause disorders. The salt mud from Sovata is renowned for successfully treating both primary and secondary infertility, especially hypoplasia uteri, as well as sterility caused by ovarian insufficiency and the occlusion of the oviduct.

Lavatherm is a heat treatment where a local warm appliance is applied onto a section of the body. The lavatherm pack is specially designed to retain heat and is warmed in water, the heat retained by a chemical reaction inside the cover. The pack is placed onto the indicated section of the body, helping to relieve pain and stimulate healing.

Paraffin packs take advantage of the heat conduction effectiveness of paraffin as it hardens at a temperature of approximately 55 °C. There are several different types of application methods, such as soaking a part of the body in paraffin, brushing paraffin onto parts of the body in layers or applying a thin sheet of paraffin onto the problematic area. The local application of the heat relaxes the muscles, causes spasm release, eases chronic pain and supports the healing and nutrition of the tissues. It also has sedative and immune biological features. The treatment in some of our spa locations is followed by dry wrap , immediately after the application of paraffin, which increases the effect and comfort of the whole treatment

Paraffin packs take advantage of the heat-conducting effectiveness of paraffin as it hardens at a temperature of approximately 55°C. There are several different types of application methods such as a special parafin box and gloves or socks filled with a mixture of wellness parafin. Gloves or socks are put in the parafin box ,they are heated to the optimal temperature and than applied on the hands or feet. Gloves and socks are disposable. The local application of heat relaxes the muscles, causing spasm release, easing chronic pain and supporting the healing and nutrition of the tissues. It also has sedative and immunobiological features, feet wraps help to regenerate craked heels. Wellness paraffin mixture contains antioxidant substances emanating from white and green tea, grape seed oil and goji. The substances eliminate free radicals and sun damage, vitamins contained in the mixture provide nutrients essential for healthy skin, regeneration and intense hydration.

Inhalation
Inhalation
List of Inhalation (3 items)

Inhalation with medicine has the same effect and uses the same principles as salt inhalation or thermal water inhalation (See: Salt Inhalation), but has a stronger effect. A combination of water, sometimes mineral water and medicine, are inhaled through a tube. During this inhalation process, the medicine is inhaled directly into the respiratory system and lungs, where it helps to dissolve mucous and has a cleansing reaction. It is effective in the treatment of chronic respiratory conditions, allergies or the after-effects of a cold or respiratory infection.

Oxygen is inhaled through an intranasal tube into the nose whilst you lie comfortably in a reclining chair. The air being inhaled is enriched with about 40-60% oxygen at a reasonable level of humidity. An increased supply of oxygen into the body enhances the immune system, improves heart activity and the elasticity of the lungs, helps the condition and efficiency of the mind and is excellent for overall health. Sometimes a vitamin drink is also offered as part of the treatment.

The salt cave is a room constructed from real salt, and depending on the location this salt can be imported from several different sources. The room is designed to be relaxing and atmospheric. During the treatment, you lie comfortably in a chair relaxing whilst breathing in the special salty air. In the process, tiny salt particles are inhaled into the respiratory system and lungs. Since salt has an anti-bacterial effect, the salt particles help dissolve mucous and have a cleansing reaction in the respiratory system. It is effective for the treatment of chronic respiratory conditions, or the after-effects of a cold or respiratory infection. Because the body is in a totally relaxed position, the inhalation process is more effective, and it combines improved respiratory function with stress reduction. In some locations this treatment is followed by a thermal bath (See Balneotherapy: Thermal Bath).

Acupuncture is a Chinese therapy that has been used for centuries. It is based on the theory that there is energy called either Chi or Qi flowing through one's body. Chi is thought to flow along energy pathways called meridians. Acupuncturists believe that a blocking or imbalance of the flow of Chi at any point on a pathway may result in illness. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners believe acupuncture unblocks and rebalances the flow of Chi to restore health. People often use acupuncture to ease pain, which is done by putting very thin needles into the skin at certain points in the body. Acupuncture is particularly effective for headaches, joint pain and allergies such as asthma.

Gerovital is an regenerative treatment administered by a series of injections. The treatment claims to slow down the ageing processes, boost revitalization and improve concentration and memory.
Counterindication: over sensitivity to procaine.

Using the same rays that are contained in sunlight, the body is exposed either partially or fully. U.V. rays can be used for different medical effects. Applied with care, U.V. light can improve the body’s immune system, muscle performance and the formation of red blood cells. U.V. light is also used in the treatment of many skin disorders, such as psoriasis and eczema, particularly in our health spa in Smrdáky, Slovakia, which specializes in treating conditions of this type.

This progressive phototherapy method utilizes the efficiency of polarized light. The light source used is a intensely bright LED with a red monochromatic light and a special polarizing film. This enables more than double the depth of penetration into the soft tissue.
