As one of the top medical spa hotels in Piestany, Slovakia, the three-star hotel Grand Splendid is a modern hotel complex set among ancient trees at the tip of Spa Island just a few metres from the nine-hole golf course. This medical spa hotel first opened its doors in 1971, and guests enjoyed a range of unique therapeutic and relaxation treatments at the impressive Balnea Health Spa, connected to the hotel by a corridor. As the hotel is also linked to the huge Congress Centre, where concerts as well as conferences take place, guests have everything they need for wellness and relaxation: sports facilities, great restaurants, cultural and social events in the evening, a wellness and fitness centre, and a medical spa - all on one gorgeous, green island in the Váh River.
The history of the accommodation premises of Balnea Grand Splendid started on 23 March 1970 when construction began. The first to be used was Hotel Balnea Splendid (12 July 1971), shortly followed by Hotel Balnea Grand, which welcomed the first patients on 16 August 1971. The whole premises are situated among fresh greenery at the end of Spa Island, in close vicinity to a 9-hole golf course.
Many famous national and international visitors, high state officials and scientists have visited and used the comfort of the modern Spa Hotel Splendid. Visitors may find not only health and tranquillity here, but may also enjoy various cultural and social events with performers from Slovakia and abroad.

Medical spa stays
At the superbly equipped medical spa, more than 60 treatments are available. The Balnea Health Spa uses the island’s healing thermal water and unique sulphur mud from the riverbed of the River Váh, in hydrotherapy, Kneipp treatments, packs and massages. After treatment, patients often feel like the famous ‘crutch-breaker’ statue, and return home completely regenerated. The relaxing thermal water and the island’s tranquil, natural setting have a major effect on visitors’ wellbeing, both physical and emotional.
The welcoming Balnea Splendid Piestany and Hotel Grand Piestany have five restaurants between them, each named after a capital city in the region. The Bratislava, Vienna, Budapest and Prague restaurants all offer modern, high-quality food with a special diet selection besides the Slovak and international specialities. The à la carte Berlin restaurant has a delightful summer terrace where guests enjoy local dishes and seasonal treats. At the Café Splendid, visitors enjoy a variety of drinks and desserts while listening to live music on the summer terrace.
Conferences and meetings at the Spa Hotel Grand Splendid take place in the little Orange Hall, which has natural daylight and a gallery, the Blue Salon, which holds 20 people for seminars and lectures, and the Green Salon & Lounge; perfect for company presentations.
This traditional spa is connected directly to the Congress Centre; the biggest conference hall on Spa Island, with a capacity of 400 people seated cinema-style.
Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sisi) and Beethoven were also fans of Piestany’s sulphurous medicinal water.
The main attraction of this small town in Slovakia – also referred to by the town’s official symbol, a statue of a man breaking his crutches (the work of Arthur Heyer) – is the medicinal thermal water that bubble up on the spa island in the river Vág. The town has several great cafés, an aquatic and equestrian sport centre and a golf course for holiday-makers to enjoy.
