Slovakia – there are 6 three, four and five-star Danubius thermal hotels in the famous spa town of Piestany as well as 3 hotels in Smrdáky, at the foot of the White Carpathians. Piestany is one of Europe’s most popular spas and owes its reputation to the thermal waters, the naturally curative effect of the mud and to its tranquil surroundings. Smrdáky is situated 60 km from Piestany. Its specialisation is above all the treatment of skin diseases in combination with diseases of locomotive apparatus through use of the unique natural sources - hydrogen sulphide mineral water and sulphurous mud.

Romania – there are 3 Danubius hotels located in Sovata, one of Transylvania’s most famous spas, in the heart of the Sóvidék (Salt Region). Due to continuous renovation, the hotel complex at Sovata welcomes guests wishing to relax or improve their health with newly developed curative therapies.

The hotel group was established over thirty years ago by the then Ministry of Internal Trade with the aim of creating and developing health tourism in Hungary. The company was state owned at the time and started business in April 1972 with the Grand Hotel Margitsziget already in operation along with the Hotel Helikon in Keszthely and building permission for the Hilton Budapest. The company became a joint stock company in July 1991 under the name Danubius Hotels Rt. and its shares were floated on the Budapest Stock Exchange in December 1992. It put in a successful tender to ÁPV Rt. for 85% ownership of Hungária Szálloda Rt. (HungarHotels) in 1996 and acquired 100% ownership in 2004.

The company first moved abroad in November 1999 with the purchase of 100% ownership of the Hotel Villa Butterfly in Marianské Lázné (Czech Republic) and 65% of Lecebne Lázné a.s. (Marianské Lázné, Czech Republic) a year later. Danubius then proceeded to acquire 31 properties, 4 spa complexes and 40 thermal springs. In 2001 the company put in a tender when the joint stock company in its sphere of interest and registered in Romania was privatized. This move helped to secure hotel rooms for 1000 occupants and other properties at Sovata Spa in Romania, as well as 82.17% ownership of the health project. Danubius obtained its hotels in Slovakia in 2002, with the purchase of 67% of the Slovenske Liecebne Kupele a.s. thermal baths complex at Piestany.

In the summer of 2004, Danubius became a partner, then in 2009 full owner of the world famous Gundel Restaurant and the company running associated businesses (the Bagolyvár Restaurant, the Borvendéglő, wine cellars at Mád and Eger) and at present owns two-thirds of Gundel.

Spa tradition at Danubius

We have over 40 hotels in 5 countries, and you will find that each of our locations has its own individual atmosphere, scenery and traditions. What they all have in common, however, is belief in the healing power of the earth's natural resources and a way of life that is built around ‘spa’.
Whether you are seeking the trusted results of our rehabilitation therapies, wish to relax and enjoy the soothing effects of nature’s wonders or simply want to escape to a pretty and exotic location, then we are waiting for you – with a warm welcome.
In many of our locations you will see this spa tradition reflected in the beautiful architecture of our properties. In the past these were actually therapy centres for the treatment of medical conditions.
With the ever-changing culture of spa, we have also moved with the times. In addition to effective therapies for the treatment of medical conditions, we also offer a wide range of pampering and
relaxation services.

Whether you are visiting for medical reasons or to relax and destress, you will instantly sense the tradition and confidence behind our procedures and the execution of our treatments – treatments that have been tried and tested over centuries.

What is a medical spa? How does it work?

Therapeutic stays are based upon a complete spa treatment plan that includes a medical consultation and individually prescribed treatments to take into consideration your specific health condition.
On arrival at a Danubius Health Spa you will be booked in with one of our highly experienced spa doctors. During this consultation you will be able to discuss your particular health or medical needs. Based upon these, the doctor will then design your personalized treatment plan. Plans combine natural treatments with physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, medical packing and massage to achieve excellent results. Depending upon progress, the doctor may subsequently adjust
the treatment prescription. We also offer a wide range of relaxation and well-being treatments beside the medical treatments to ensure that you leave feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Treatments in our spas take advantage of the natural resources found in each of these countries, ranging from thermal mineral waters to sulphuric mud, spring waters and natural gases. Use of these natural resources has a tradition and history, which we combine with our medical expertise to offer effective results.
If you are staying with us on one of our longer spa stays, the doctor will make a final examination and lifestyle recommendation. To benefit effectively from the treatment you are advised to stay for between 2 and 3 weeks.

We offer treatment for:

  • Rheumatism (soft tissue and rheumatoid arthritis)

The Gundel Restaurant has been a popular dining spot since the era of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in the 19th century; in the years between the two world wars it became one of the most famous restaurants in Central Europe.
It was built in 1894 in the City Park, in Hungarian Art Nouveau style, according to plans by the architect, Ervin Bauer.

The brilliant Károly Gundel invented numerous classic dishes which are still on the menu today. They include the famous Pike-Perch à la Gundel and the famous Gundel Pancakes. The distinguished executive chef, Kálmán Kalla, has created sophisticated versions of traditional Hungarian dishes and brought up to date several dishes in Central European aristocratic cuisine. The sommelier at Gundel has collected a rich selection of Hungarian wines from the various wine regions in Hungary as well as wines from Gundel’s own vineyards.

In addition to the restaurant and the elegant Queen Elizabeth ballroom where diplomatic, social and business meetings are held there are seven intimate, private rooms in the building which are furnished in fin de siècle style. In summer an enormous shady garden and a terrace are available for guests to use.

A few years after taking over the lease of the city park restaurant, Károly Gundel decided to open a family restaurant next door for visitors to the zoo.
In December 1992, George Láng and Ronald S. Lauder, the owners of Gundel, decided to resurrect the Bagolyvár (Owl’s Castle) and restore it to its old magic. The renovated restaurant opened its doors in May 1993. The furnishings evoke the bourgeois dining rooms of the early 20th century, the tables are covered with heavy damask tablecloths and drawings and engravings decorate the walls.
The idea for the revival was ‘simply genial’: the flavours and foods that accompany us through life are mostly connected with women. So let it be exclusively women who do the cooking and serving at table here!

The 1894 Food and Wine Cellar was developed in the wine cellars of the Gundel Palace and opened its doors to the public in the spring of 2002.
As we arrive, two wine cellars appear before us: one bears the name of Zsuzsanna Lorántffy, consort of the Transylvanian prince, in whose Tokay district vineyard Tokay Aszú was first made in the mid-17th century, the other that of St. Orbán, the patron saint of vineyards and wine cellars.

Everything one could wish for is to be found here beneath the ancient brick arches of the Food and Wine Cellar: fine wines and delicious food can be enjoyed in pleasant company.  Guests can sip as they please from over one hundred wines made by Hungary’s best winemakers and the Tokay and Eger wines from Gundel’s own wine-cellars.  On entering, the guest can start with a glass of wine, take part in a wine-tasting, a dinner accompanied by wine or the countless other forms of enjoying wine.
