Whether you’re here for a day, brand new to London or a seasoned traveler there is no getting over the splendor and eminence of the capital’s monuments, landmarks and historic sites. Here is what is on our must do when visiting London.
One of the most iconic things to see (and do) in London is the famous London Eye. It’s the perfect place to start to get an overview of all of London from 135m high in a glass capsule. Launched in 2000 it quickly became the UK’s best selling tourist attraction, offering exclusive deals such as the Champagne Experience. Open daily from 10:30 to 20:30 (subject to weather), it’s located just 25 minutes away from the Danubius London Regent’s Park (only a few stops on the Jubilee Line from St John’s Wood). Perhaps the most important church in all of England, Westminster Abbey has a significant place in the British Monarchy and History: coronations, weddings, funerals and celebrations of all sort. This century old Gothic abbey church is superbly located 20 minutes away from the Hotel, only four stops on the Jubilee Line. Times of opening and closing depend on the season, and whether or not you’d like to visit the museum, the chapel, the tombs and other locations within the abbey. It is best to visit between 9:30 and 15:30. The prices of admission vary on what you want to see, but there are many packages and discounts available online.
The most famous and significant clock in London, Big Ben is an obvious icon in the capital. It lays on the masterfully built clock tower and is an attraction whose splendor and beauty does not diminish with time. It is right next to Westminster Tube Station, four stops from The Danubius Hotel Regents Park. You can tour the inside of the tower at specific tour dates and at set times of 9.00am, 11.00am or 2.00pm Monday to Friday. It is recommended to reserve your tour in advance due to high demand. The price of this tour is £18.50 for adults, £7.50 for children.
Extend your tour of the Royal sites by stopping at Buckingham Palace. The beautiful and historic home of the Queen is a must do, especially on a the changing of the guard happens. Don’t miss the flamingo filled Buckingham Gardens, a beautiful visit in the summer especially. Located 25 minutes away from Danubius Regents Park by tube, the closest underground stations is Green Park. It usually opens daily from 10:00 to 17:00, but these times are subject to change due to weather, season, renovation etc. Admission are from £9.30 for adults and £5.50 for children (free for infants).
A square known for everything from the King’s Mews, demonstrations and feral pigeons and New Year’s Eve celebrations: Trafalgar Square. Perhaps the nicest place for an evening stroll, it’s easy to fall in love with the beautiful architecture and iconic fountain. Don’t miss out on the various landmarks there are to see around, from the National Gallery to Nelson’s Columns. The closest Underground stations is Charing Cross, only a few stop away from the Hotel on the Bakerloo Line, from Baker Street.
Probably one of the most photographed monuments in England, Tower Bridge is just moments away from the London Eye. From the historical significance of the bridge, it’s incredible and ground breaking architecture (biggest bascule bridge built during its time!) to its cultural significance, it’s a definite must to see at least once in your life. And on top of this, the view is incredible thanks to the new featured installed just recently – a glass floor. During the summer it’s open from 10:00 to 18:00 and during winter from 9:30 to 17:30. Admission for adults is £9.00, and £3.90 for children (under 5 for free). You can get a 10% discount by booking online.
The largest collection of modern art in the world, Tate Modern is a must see for art lovers but also beginner enthusiasts. The collections are classified into four groups: History-Memory-Society; Nude-Action-Body; Landscape-Matter-Environment and Still Life-Object-Real Life. From brilliant exhibitions that change almost monthly to the staple collection, it’s difficult to get bored here. You also have a variety of options: from free daily guided tours, to ‘Tours for Two’ and group tours, there’s something for everybody. A short walk from the London Eye, the museum is free and opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00, Some charges may apply for special exhibitions.
After exploring the city and its monuments, you must spare some time for The London Zoo, especially if you are traveling with your family! Originally opened almost 200 years ago, for research purposes it is now one of the most celebrated establishments of its kind in Europe, holding nearly 800 species! The zoo often organizes exclusive exhibits such as ‘’Land of the Lions’’ or ‘’Meet the Monkey’s’’and it is only a 15 minute stroll through Regent’s Park from the Hotel, or alternatively a 5 minute bus ride to Primrose Hill with bus 274. It’s open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, admission for adults is £24.25, children £17.25 (infants for free).
The British Museum is one of the largest museums of its kind, with over 8 million artifacts. They range endlessly, documenting and celebrating human existence from its very beginning: from art and culture, to food, politics, economies and more, enjoy exploring this huge facility. Perhaps a reason on its own to visit London, the British Museum is bound to captivate you for hours on end. Here’s a fun fact you probably didn’t know: the British Museum had more visit last year than Belgium! It’s open every day from 10:00 to 17:30, until 20:30 on weekends and admission is always free! Located in Russell Square,it is only a short tube journey from the Danubius Hotel.
The Natural History Museum, the place where Education and fun go hand in hand for children and adults alike. This taxonomy research museum holds about 80 million items within five main collections: botany, entomology, mineralogy, paleontology and zoology. The entrance is free. It’s open everyday from 10:00 to 6:00, located 40 minutes away from Danubius London.
