Every October 23rd, the Magyars commemorate the 1956 Revolution against the Soviet occupation over Hungary with an official flag-raising ceremony, political speeches, and military processions in front of the Parliament at Kossuth Lajos Square, while the House of Terror Museum grants free access to visitors, alongside many of the city’s historic sites. Learn about the history of 1956 in this article, and read the stories of three refugees who decided to flee Hungary during the communist regime only to return to the country decades later.
